A variety of sources inspire my paintings, including nature and the landscape, still life and abstraction. I find the subjects for my landscape paintings as I travel, as well as in views from my studio or home. I have gradually moved towards abstraction in this work, while retaining a strong relationship to the subject matter.
This movement towards abstraction can also be seen in my imagined still life compositions, in which objects are freely strewn over the picture plane.
Forms appear and disappear within the surrounding color fields, sometimes outlined by a brush stroke. My pure abstract paintings blend all of my experience and observations, focusing on color and shape and seeking out contrasts between sharp and soft.
I paint in thin fluid layers of oil paint, over a colored ground, using glazes in selected areas. The many translucent layers result in a veiled yet luminous image. |
